Scythian Animal Art

The Scythians were nomadic herders of the Eurasian step during the 1st millenium Before Christ.  They lived their lives on horses but were also master goldsmiths. Their Art tended to be small and portable ornements vividly depicting wild animals and hunting.

Putting an emphasis on dynamic, raw scenes of predators and prey and exaggerating the “powerful” parts of an animal, the figures exude tension and speed, feel cinematic with their antlers turned into waves and coiled creatures pouncing or being pounced upon. The “powers” of the animal are transmitted through the ornements, often put on battle shields and weapons.

Mythological creatures like the Griffin or the Two-headed Eagle are sometimes portrayed. Scythians wore tattoos with similar designs.

The Scythian Animal Style had a great influence all over the Ancient World and is thought to be an ancestor of Celtic Art.
