The Tayra (Eira barbara) is a South American mammal from the Marten family, cousin of the Wolverine and the Fischer. Also called Chien-bois, Eira and Tolomuco, amongst many regional names.
Tayras weigh 3 to 7 kg (6–15 lbs) and measure 56–71 cm (22–28 in) in body length plus a 40 cm (15 in) tail, between a cat and a dog.
According to Field Guide to the Carnivores of the World, the Tayra “eats rodents up to the size of agouti, opossums, reptiles and fish, fruit and some plant matter. It can pursue prey into trees and deep water. It lives in all types of forests and tolerates agricultural land and plantations“.
The Tayra is an unusual carnivore as it prefers daytime and is equally adept on the ground, in water and high up in the trees. Its fruit stashing behavior is also quite uncommon.
