Cafe L’Aubette

The very Classical 1778 building in the middle of Strasbourg, France, reserves a surprise to its visitors. The interiors were redesigned in 1928 by Avant-gardists Theo van Doesburg (founder of De Stijl review) and wife & husband Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Jean Arp.

The owners wanted to turn the venerable Aubette into an innovative night club multiplex or, as they were called then, ballrooms. The cafe/bar was to have enough room in the middle to dance and double as a movie theatre and was dubbed a “cine-dancing” or “cine-bal”. Often used for conventions today.
