Grandville, The Grand Illustrator of France

Gloved cat from “100 Proverbs”

Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard (1803-1847) was a French illustrator and caricaturist born in Nancy who was very popular during his lifetime and very influential after. His body of work is vast and endlessly inventive. It’s also in the public domain and widely available on the Internet. Try for example the wonderful color illustrations of Les Fleurs Animees or Fables of La Fontaine at the French National Library’s site Gallica.
