The Mad Funk of Captain Yaba

Captain Yaba (born Azongo Nyaaba) was from the Fra Fra ethnic group and was born in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region of Ghana in the late 1960s. When he was still a child, he began playing the local two-stringed lute or banjo known as the Koliko. He is credited with being the first to bring the instrument down from Bolgatanga into the mainstream of Ghanaian music. He recorded his first album (cassette only) in 1989 with producer Feisal Helwani and followed it up with Tinanure (CD & cassette) a year later. He passed away in 2001 in Accra. His music mixes Ghanaian Funk with the Sahel vibes of his childhood (listen to Tenanure).
