Otagi Nenbutsu-ji was originally founded by Empress Shōtoku around Kyoto’s Gion district in the year 766. Many times damaged by flood, typhoon, civil war and abandoned, the renovation started in 1955 under the direction of Kocho Nishimura. These are Rakan, the followers of Buddha, created by everyday people who made a pilgrimage to learn carving under the guidance of Kocho Nishimura. 1200 statues so far.
