Jazz & Hijaz

The Greek magazine Jazz & Hijaz would add a CD as an extra with their magazine well into the 2000s. Two of these were Jazz & Xitzaz 1960-1970 and Jazz & Xitzaz vol 2, a blend of Belly Dancing music, Exotica & Oriental Jazz. Recorded in the 60s in New York by Greek, Armenian, Jewish and other musicians. I recognized only two names.

George Mgrdichian is an Armenian-American and ethnomusicology major. He is a wonderful Oud player, here taking on Brubeck‘s Take Five.

A good Miserlou by George Abdo: “Known as “The King of Belly Dance Music,” George Abdo and his Flames of Araby Orchestra combine Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Armenian, Greek, and Turkish musical traditions to create a uniquely American belly dance soundscape” (liner notes for Belly Dance).
