The commercial comeback of yesteryear’s stars is usually a painful exercice in nostalgia. Not so with Calypso Rose. Born Linda McCartha Monica Sandy-Lewis in 1940 in Bethel, Tobago; a calypsonian since age 12, author of one thousand songs in the Calypso genre, the music of Trinidad & Tobago. Her albums of the 2000’s gather many of the great musicians of the islands and her composing chops haven’t gone away one bit.
Calypso Rose would argue it’s not a comeback: She has never left and has been Calypso Queen the whole time: “They say I reigned for too long/ forgetting my constitution is strong“.
