Legend has it that Charlemagne granted Andorra its freedom against a contingent of soldiers he needed to fight the Moors. The national anthem is El Gran Carlemany (the Great Charlemagne).

Since the 800s, Andorra is part of the holdings of the Counts of Urgell, the county just South of Andorra. In the 1200s, Foix, the county just North of Andorra, obtained by force to share Andorra‘s sovereignty equally with Urgell. Later, Foix‘s land rights were transferred to France and those of the Counts were sold to the bishop of Urdell.

Fast forward to today and, somehow, Andorra has become a parliamentary co-principality with the bishop of Urgell and the president of France as co-princes.

Population: 82 000; Area: 467.63 km2 (180.55 sq mi); Capital: Andorra La Vella; Andorra is not part of the European Union.

To simplify, Andorra consists of half a dozen mountain valleys stuck between France and Spain in the Eastern Pyrenees Mountains.
