Nathaniel Carlyle Adderley (November 25, 1931 – January 2, 2000) played cornet (a kind of trumpet) alongside his more famous brother Julian Cannonball Adderley in the Cannonball Adderley Quintet.
Cannonball Adderley is well known for his collaboration with Miles Davis, playing alto sax alongside Coltrane, the new, experimental Modal Jazz of Kind of Blue.
Cannonball and his younger brother Nat founded the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, playing a simplified Be Bop using Gospel and Blues melodies, call-and response structures and an altogether funkier sound while playing impeccable Jazz.
I’ve chosen a solo project by Nat, who replaced Cannonball with Joe Henderson on tenor sax. Joe‘ s trademark is “Joe Henderson is always in the middle of a great solo.” Listen to the joy.
Nat Adderley: cornet; Joe Henderson: tenor saxophone; John Asbury: piano; Bob Cranshaw: bass; Roy McCurdy: drums
