Elevator to the Scaffolds (Ascenceur pour l’echafaud) Louis Malle,1958
Jeanne Moreau is looking for her missing lover in the streets of Paris in 1957 while Miles Davis’s band is improvising the soundtrack as the movie is being played to them.
Miles Davis hadn’t prepared the musicians and they had to improvise without a theme, riff, or melody, with just a few cords and scales to get started. These methods and the modal sound make this soundtrack a forerunner to Davis’s famous Kind of Blue.
